Chris Ello's opening shot....Thursday, Feb. 26th

PROVO, Utah -- If you thought it was tough to take SDSU's loss to BYU on Tuesday night, imagine what I had to deal with....At least you got to wake up in San Diego the next morning.

I had to wake up here, amongst the celebrating Mormons.....the headlines in the morning newspaper saluting the virtues of Jimmer.....walking around town in my San Diego State gear, looking for a place to hide.

There's no place I'd rather not be.

Provo, Utah....where it's still tough to find a beer or light up a smoke....where a cup of coffee in the morning is a hassle, and a Diet Coke is like pulling teeth.

A place where the woman's place is still the home, like it was in the rest of America in the 40's....A place where blacks still must feel out-of-place....A place where's there's no place at all for gays or lesbians.

A place where the Mormon church rules, and BYU athletes sneak around campus trying to bend the rules....A place where you're free to do as you please, as long as what you do pleases them.

Walking around the downtown area of Provo on Wednesday afternoon, I felt as close as I could ever feel what it must have been like for blacks to walk around Birmingham in the 60's.

Unwanted. Uneasy.

In this day and age -- unreal.

Fortunately, today I will return to San Diego...and I'll be happy to arrive home. And I will bring along with me a rare victory. SDSU's great women's basketball team, led by the incomparable coach Beth Burns, ripped BYU last night, 59-47, and it wasn't even that close. The Cougars needed a 16-2 run in garbage time to just to make it appear closer.

At least somebody from San Diego State can beat BYU. With the victory the Aztec women completed a season sweep for the first time since 1995.

And even though the men's team now seems doomed to another disheartening appearance in the NIT, these ladies look like they're going places....A win over TCU at Cox Arena this coming Saturday would be SDSU's 20th of the season and all but clinch an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

If they get there, the Aztecs would get to play at home the first two rounds, because Cox is a first-round NCAA Tourney site.....As it stands now, the Aztecs are 13-0 at home and have won 15 straight going back to last season.

Of course, they could use a little more attention -- the season's largest home crowd to date has been just under 3,000....I know you're unlikely to simply take my recommendation, but you should show up Saturday at Cox (2 p.m.) to see the TCU game. The Lady Frogs are half-game up on the Aztecs in the Mountain West Conference standings and beat SDSU the first time around by three.

There's a lot riding on Saturday....And you ought to take the opportunity to climb aboard for the ride.

Then see how long it might last come March Madness.

That, by the way, is a madness I can live with....The madness in this backwards town -- well, that's a different story.

  1. Wow, must suck to have such an inferiority complex that all you can do is insult other peoples religion to make yourself feel better

  2. Read the first few paragraphs, and realized that wow you have a serious hate problem. Best of luck...

  3. I am amazed At how much hate you have towards a religion based off of your teams inability to win. Very disappointing.

  4. How are you employed by a radio station? Comparing Provo to 60s Birmingham? Awesomely classy. By the way, were you alive in Birmingham in the 60s you racist dbag? I hope you get seriously beaten so maybe you can feel what it was like in Alabama in the 1960s and THEN you can compare it to Provo.

By the way, this is also the worst blog post from a writer, editor and a transition standpoint. You address 2 completely different topics: thankfully one of them identifies you as a bigot. In theory you would separate the topics out so that readers have a clear idea about what you would like them to know.

But since you are employed by a radio station to spew your garbage I guess you get this platform from which to do so.

I'm sure you're sitting back counting the page views thinking "mission accomplished" but your actions are truly foolish and I hope someone burns a cross in your front yard.

  5. Hahaha, that hurts coming from Chris "nobody sportwriter" Ello

  6. In your rant about how BYU has no honor I find it ironic that you don't see how you dishonor me as a San Diego St. Alum. While I am not Mormon, I have no I'll will towards any religion. In this column you talk about persecution of people in Utah based off of assumption while you in turn are persecuting Mormons. Don't you see that you are the hypocrite? I wish you had nothing to do with SDSU because you make us all look bad.

    ReplyDelete
  7. You compare Provo to the 40's and 60's...yet you sound like you are a 'Mormon Racist' before blacks were integrated into schools ect. BYU is the face of hypocrisy? Maybe Chris Ello should look in the mirror. Good luck with your hate-mongering.

  8. inside provo city limits:

    7 coffee shops
    5 bars
Diet cokes at ever grocery store/gas station of campus...

Sounds like you didn't get out much. Spent too much time cowering out of sight in your San Diego State gear.

Grow up and write something worth reading.

    Thank You!

  9. Were you expecting to find strip clubs and bars at every corner? Did you also expect to find a lot of other SDSU fans? Really, how tough is it find a beer and light a smoke? Please explain to me how troubles accomplishing either.

And during this visit where everything was so hard for you, you were able to find out that the athletes sneak around bending the rules....

Bro you are a JOKE! It's funny cuz you try to make someone else look bad but make yourself look worse.

  10. Your bigotry allowed to be spewed from a radio station is really appalling, Looks like you would fit right in with the racist bigots back in the 60's. I agree with a previous post, wish the worst to you and hope you get a beat down like someone in Alabama in the 60's. Complete loser trash.

    ReplyDelete
  11. This individual should be thrown off the radio for such bigotry.

  12. What kind of trash radio station employs such a bigot? Most irresponsible "journalist" I've ever heard on sports talk radio. Never do you, at anytime, back up a single claim with a source or a fact. Not with this stupid blog post or with your hate filled rant on the radio the other day. As a black BYU fan I can honestly say you are full of crap. I attended BYU and your 1960's claim is complete BS, I NEVER experienced racism at BYU. I couldn't fathom what it would have been like to have been alive during the civil rights movement. YOU, on the other hand, take a stroll through downtown Provo looking for a beer, cig, and a lap dance and suddenly you know what it was like to be treated like a black man in the 60's. Please, us Black folk don't need people like you making unsubstantiated claims and/or pulling the race card for us. Grow up.

  25. What's more pathetic? That you write this crap and act like you really think it is ok to say (I assume you are a somewhat intelligent guy). Or that the kind of fans you cater to for ratings love hearing this non-sense.

Not surprising that SDSU fans eat this up given that they may have the most underperformaing football team in the nation. Pathetic.

And now you get all this attention for acting like a moron.

  26. This is the greatest bit of humor I've come across in a while. You comparing Provo, Utah to Birmingham Alabama in the 60s! Hilarious!

  30. Very few Provo residents are as you describe them. I am a Provo resident and if we met in real life away from Provo you would probly really like me. Your hatred toward the LDS Church clouds your vision of how wonderful the people of this valley really can be. Holding grudges makes life misserable.

    ReplyDelete
  31. No way this guy should be employed by any responsible company.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Wow! You do realize that people are going to believe this garbage right? Although you have the right to say these things, where's the responsibility? Seems you're too interested in entertaining that you'll do it at the expense of others. Reminds me of a bully in high school. He could only get attention by putting other people down, no one liked him.

Good luck with this approach, it will get you zero places in the real world, because the really good paying jobs can see you for the hack that you are.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow everyone! Way to turn the hate back towards the guy. What Chris said was out of line, but no need to come on and call him a loser for it. The guy obviously was speaking in frustration and emotion, and while it was a bit irresponsible, it is understandable and as a BYU fan and employee myself, I forgive him. Just like many Utah fans, alums, etc. need to get over Max Hall's famous comments towards them and forgive the guy, it would also be nice if all BYU fans would simply forgive this Chris guy and let it go. It is just as classless and hypocritical to stoop to the same level he did by calling him a "loser", hoping he gets "beaten", gets a cross on his lawn, etc.

As for any racial mudslinging being hurled out on the field, I'm sure there are some guys popping off at each other in all such games, and wouldn't doubt if some of it was racial, but I'm sure it would be going both ways on both sides of the ball. And as for blanketing all of BYU and Provo as being racist as Chris has so ignorantly claimed, it can't be hard to simply refute it with out being all antagonistic towards him. If the culture was so racist, wouldn't all the black athletes they have on their various teams reject all offers from them and pursue scholarship offers elsewhere? I remember a game in basketball last year where BYU had four black players and a Brazilian all on the floor at the same time. Not one white guy was on the floor for them. While there was most likely a culture of racism and misunderstandings towards blacks in Provo back in the 60's as there was so many other places, its not so much now. In my observations, diversity at BYU and in Provo at large is growing, albeit gradually, and as one who frequents the BYU campus, I see and meet all kinds of students and other people of various races, particularly blacks, who are fully engaged there, involved, accepted and absolutely happy to be there and are enjoying there experience there.

Perhaps there are still some in the older generations of Mormons that still have some racial discomforts and hold on to old misunderstandings due to the culture they were brought up in, but as far as I can see and have experienced myself, the younger and rising generation of Mormons are much more racially divers and in turn, much more accepting and embracing toward those of other races.

So again, having said all that, if anyone wants to take the high road and show some class, its time to forgive Chris and his ignorant, emotionally charged comments and let it go.

Time to look forward to some great match-ups against the two schools in basketball this year with both expecting to go 1-2 in the conference standings. Steve Fisher is a class act and a great guy and I hope, if only for his sake, that the basketball contests this year are much less dramatic and heated off the court and that nobody in the SDSU community does anything so stupid to embarrass him. I also hope nobody in the BYU fan base or community does anything stupid enough toward SDSU or anyone at that matter that could embarrass Dave Rose and his program.

Also, to any other SDSU fans out there, I hope that all continue to have success through the rest of the season just as you started and hope to be able to cheer on the Aztecs in any bowl game they can get to. That is definitely a program on the rise with lots of potential in the future, irregardless of this last week's drama on and off the field.

    -Will W.

  35. Wow! Way to paint with a broad stereotypical brush! Your prejudiced and bigoted diatribe is beyond ridiculous. It is pathetic. As a broadcaster and journalist, you crossed the line. That was the most unprofessional hate-filled rant I have ever read. What's more, you don't have the manhood to truly apologize. You embarrass yourself, your family, your employer, and SDSU. It's time to man up and offer a sincere apology to BYU, its fans, and the Provo community. And remember, you're supposedly a professional that covers sports. These are games. Get a grip!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Are you for real? Those guys send teams to SDSU every year and get royally abused by low class students and fans. The Aztecs and their fans go there and are treated a lot better. You are a jerk and an embarrassment to the community. I hope 619 does a better job of hiring in the future.

  46. Your radio rant and your posting says so much more about you and the type of person you are than anything you could say about BYU or the LDS church. I feel sorry for you. Truly.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ello you're a freaking liar! No way in hades have dozens and dozens of former players complained to you about racial slurs coming from BYU players. This is one of the most absurd, ridiculous, irresponsible rants I have ever heard. I hope it costs you your job.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Mr. Ello,

You stated on your radio show that BYU supporters should be ashamed of the institution that we support, but the institution which you represent should be ashamed that you are a part of their program. The SDSU athletic department, however, will likely turn an eye to your rant as they have to every other innapropriate campaign on their campus targeting the LDS Church. I don't believe that any reasonable person would believe that those associated with BYU are racist in any way, but your blanket statements against a group (or church) prove your bigotted nature. I am really sorry that you hate losing to BYU so much, but before you judge the character of an entire group within society you might want to expand your knowledge outside of the context of the sporting world. You obviously know very little of the LDS Church and its University, and you rely on the utterings and misperceptions of others. I really feel sorry for you, and I hope that you do not remain such a miserable person for the rest of your life.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I have lived in AZ, Nevada, Utah and California. Utah is the least hostile towards blacks. Gays perhaps not as much -- don't ask, don't tell status. Though a very clean city with high morals and a desire to keep the city clean, Provo isn't perfect. Compared to San Diego, however, it is heaven vs. hades. At least I would consider raising my children in Provo. San Diego? No way!!! It isn't about bigotry or racism, it is about morality vs. immorality. Provo is a unique place in the entire world. Some people appreciate that it doesn't try to be anything else than it is -- but to say that it anything like you have described is a far stretch.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Your article is fallacious, based on hasty generalizations. It lacks factual information. Give some names of players who have told you about the racial slurs, provide information about where you walked around and what you did. It seems as though you may have made it all the way from the press box to your car and then to the airport without detour in order to experience the difficulty you had in not finding any coffee, beer, or diet coke. I'm sorry that you hate BYU and what it stands for. I'm sorry that you believe they have no honor. I'm sorry that you had to establish that you have no respect or honor. Hopefully someday, you will find something that can bring you true happiness.

  53. You can't find a cup of Coffee or a Diet coke? That is a lie. Why don't you just go to any corner store? You can't find beer? You can find a beer at any store. Smoking in Provo? Well, I think California and New York have the toughest smoking laws in the country. Mormons? Sounds like you hate mormons? These mormons you make fun of? Almost everyone of them would give you the shirt off their back.

Hey, what would one of your grandfathers or your Dad think of these comments you made?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hey Mormons!!! Hahahaha!! I read the trib piece too, and guess what!? This guys right!! BYU is a bunch of hypocrites!! So are all of YOU!! He never said anything about anyones religion, he simply talked about the mundane life you all live down in happy valley. So shut the hell up and get back to reading your scriptures!!

Unless it was early in the civil rights movement. Mormons still hated blacks back then. Until it became politically expedient. I wonder how long it'll take before theres so much pressure on the church about gay rights that they'll buckle on that one? "We accept everyone"? You don't accept gays, smokers, drinkers(coffee or alcohol), only recently started accepting blacks. . .I'm sure I could go on. Don't sweat it Ello. These people are SO stupid. Truly.

Why do people think anyone gives a damn where they want to "raise the kids". Provo is a terrible place to raise kids. Why would you want them growing up in SUCH a vanilla place? Your kids will hear the same old tired views and opinions based in the same old lies and beliefs for there whole lives. Not only that, your children will be attending schools that have watered down funding because everyone down there is having SO MANY children, but paying the same amount of tax!! The mormons don't think they're indoctrinated. HAHAHAHA!! What a nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I love how all the mormons think they can get this guy fired. Hey mormons: This may come as a surprise to you, but you're not THAT important. As a matter of fact, you've all proven yourselves to be intellectually feeble by believing in fairy tales.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You are obviously a very talented sports announcer and devoted SDSU fan. We all get emotional about teams and frustration can get the better of us at times and we may say things we later regret. The only difference is that most of us aren't holding a microphone in our hand when we do it. Public rants have a way of coming back to you whether its your employer who finds they can't trust you to be smart on the air or a segment of your listeners (fans) who get turned off by your biased viewpoint. A word of advice---next time take your frustration out at your local bar before you get on the air.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Its remarkable that you can say these things about a religion and still have a job. If someone would have said similar things about a Muslim town, or an Amish town, or a Bible Belt town in the South there would be an uproar. You should be proud of yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm a Mormon who attended SDSU and then did my post-graduate work at BYU. I was usually treated nicely at SDSU when I told people I was Mormon (there were actually a few Mormon players on the SDSU football team when I was a student if I remember correctly), but there's a serious inferiority complex in the San Diego sports world when it comes to BYU and most BYU fans are completely oblivious to it. Last year I went to the BYU v. SDSU game and it was like a home game for BYU. San Diego can't get fans to games and I rarely met a fellow student who cared much about the athletic programs. Clearly this guy is one of the more serious victims of the complex.

I have probably attended 20 BYU home games in my life and have never heard a racial slur uttered in the stadium. I have no idea how to gauge what goes on on the field and maybe the players play nasty, but the only reason this guy is complaining about it is because they can't beat them, even in years when they get stomped by Utah State.

Also, I should add I carried a Diet Coke onto campus every single day, picked up right across the street from campus at any gas station or convenience store in the vicinity. They all sold coffee too.

Maybe Chris should redirect his anger at the SDSU Athletic Department and football program who have had all the tools to build a world-class football team and have utterly failed.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Actually, I feel bad for the BYU employee who (as I understand it) is a video technical specialist and his only job was to make sure that the video ref got all the views from the cameras. Has there been any comment from the paid ref that he didnt see all of the camera shots? This reporter and the MWC owe this BYU employee and part time MWC employee an apology.

  65. You all read the article in the Salt Lake Tribune so you are feigning outrage. Having lived in Utah county as a non-Mormon I appreciate that much of what he says is correct.

Do not back down from this or your radio statement. The rest of America needs to see what a crazy hypocritical organization this is and realize the BYU madrassa is the one who should be looking at the hate it projects around the world instead of calling out others.

By the way, they didn't allow African-Americans to become priests until the 70's so actually, Birmingham probably was more advance in racial relations then Provo.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Let me get this straight:
-You walked around Provo in SDSU gear and were persecuted into unreasoning fear and babbling.
-On the other hand, I can walk around Provo in my U of U gear [btw, a school people in Provo actually care about] and no one gives me any grief.

    LOL.

No wonder we were invited into the PAC instead of SDSU. It was you they didn't want on their campuses. THANKS!!! Luv ya bro, you da man!

  70. Nobody cares about this guy's crazy rants. It doesn't look like anyone even commented on his blog until yesterday.

I think he has some serious paranoia issues for which he should probably get some counseling before he goes postal. Good luck with that.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I love the SDSU apologists who try to justify this guy's behavior with their own anti-mormon rants!! Why is it that open season on Mormons is tolerated, while in our politically correct society the slightest misunderstanding becomes a cause celebre and grounds for lawsuits, protests, etc.? Seems like a double standard to me . . . bottom line, we all should ignore those who want to pick a fight and have demonstrated they have no weapons.

  73. Good column. All the BYU homers in here are really upset, and it is amusing -- they absolutely cannot stand being called out by someone from the real world. Everyone hates BYU but it only makes them feel "persecuted," which they mistake for a virtue.

  74. Come on guys, everybody needs to go easy on Cris. Can you imagine what it must be like to cheer for a football team that couldn't beat most local highschools? This guy's life has been miserable for years. BYU fans wanted to off themselves when there were three brief losing seasons, but this guy's team hasn't had a single winning season in years! We shouldn't be bothered that he took his pain out on BYU. It's gotta hurt to get killed by them every year, even when they are bad. As a resident of southern CA, I don't think I've ever met a fan of SDSU, even among SDSU alumni, so this poor guy is weathering the adversity alone. One of my friends who is a grad of SDSU didn't even know they had a football team. Let's cut this poor, suffering man some slack.

  75. Chris Ello sounds like the kind of American that complains about all the foreigners while travelling outside the U.S.

  76. Let it sink in pudge. BYUs worst team in 20 years just beat SDSUs best team in 20 years. The bottom line is no one cares about SDSU even in San Diego (trust me I live here). This guy needs to hit the gym, get a chin implant, and stop doing his hair like Dwight from the office. Then, and only then will he gain a little happiness in his life. Because we sure know SDSU sports isn't going to do it for him.

  77. Stick with calling woman's basketball where you belong and no one listens to you. My guess is by the time it starts you will be looking for a new gig anyhow.

  79. For those of you who had a hard time making it through this poor excuse for a blog post, what Chris is saying is:

"There are two kinds of people I can't stand - Those who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Mormons."

  80. Dear Chris,

Clearly you didn't learn anything from your survey course in American history from the local community college, sorry I meant SDSU. So here are a couple of points to educate you a little:

    1) The 1940s were actually one of the most progressive decades of American history in terms of women's rights prior to the 1960s and 1970s. You see, there was this small event called World War II that sent the vast majority of the men off to Europe and the Pacific. The result was that women began filling the positions in factories that had normally been filled by men. Many of the motivations for the women's rights movement began during this decade as these women learned that they could fill a place outside the home.

    2) Do you have any clue, whatsoever, what went on in Birmingham in the 1960s? If you are going to make that comparison, you are sure as heck going to have to provide some concrete evidence for the following: that minorities are being arrested for trying to eat in Provo restaurants; that attack dogs are being set loose on minorities; that minorities are having fire hydrants turned on them; that crosses are being burned outside the homes of minorities; that people are being lynched for the color of their skin; etc.

Say that Provo is not your favorite place in the world. Say that Provo is not the friendliest environment for people of other faiths. Say that Provo is not a very diverse community. Say any number of these things and I will agree with you and argue that there are changes that need to be made. But the second you invoke Birmingham in the 1960s, you lose all credibility. That statement should offend every single African American in this country, as well as all the rest of us who have actually studied American history. In fact, the very nature of that comment ought to cost you your job in the world of broadcast journalism because it is so ignorant and offensive. Hate BYU, Mormonism, Utah, etc., fine. But don't you dare make light of one of this country's most shameful periods of racial persecution! Provide some concrete evidence or make an apology for your ignorance and idiocy.

  81. It's so easy to take the low road. It's lazy really. I don't know if you consider yourself a journalist Mr. Ello, but if you do, you failed your profession miserably with your rant on the radio and your continued ramblings in this blog.

You have failed to uphold your pledge to be objective and unbiased in your reporting. You have failed to search out the facts. You used the public airwaves to spew hate and misinformation about an event that happens every weekend in college and pro sports. Calls get blown, replays get misinterpreted, humans make mistakes.

You assumed and shouted to the rooftops foul play, even though you made no attempt to discover the policies of the MWC and many other athletic conferences in accordance with instant replay. While hiring current employees of a university playing in the game where the replay crew is working shows poor judgment it doesn't mean those working on that crew are dishonest and intended to cheat your team of a win.

SDSU's coach, school representatives should publicly apologize for spreading the misinformation and for leaking the names of individuals involved putting their good names up to unjustified ridicule, libel, and slander.

You should turn in your journalist credentials and go back to school. Once you've learned how to be a good journalist come back and do it right.

If you were in my employ you would not be working in my shop any longer.
